Is leaded crystal safe?

Some of our crystal items may be labelled as “24% lead crystal.” This is completely normal and simply means that lead oxide has been used in the glassmaking process. When crystal is made, the raw materials are melted at extremely high temperatures for many hours. During this process, the lead becomes chemically bonded into the glass, which gives crystal its extra sparkle, weight and clarity. In this solid form, the lead is safely locked inside the material and does not transfer through normal use, handling or display.

Lead crystal has been used for over 350 years and is considered safe for its intended purpose. Small amounts of lead can technically “leach” into liquids, but the levels found are far lower than the amount of lead most people consume daily in a standard diet. Drinks like whisky, wine and gin are very unlikely to be affected at all. Cognac and port are slightly more prone to drawing out trace amounts if left for long periods, which is why storing spirits in a crystal decanter for months or years isn’t recommended.

For everyday use, there is no issue. You can safely enjoy wine, spirits, water and other drinks in crystal glasses and decanters. If you want to prepare a new decanter before its first use, a simple rinse with vinegar can help reduce any trace surface lead.

Not all of our crystal contains lead, but occasionally we receive pieces where the manufacturer specifies it. When this happens, the packaging will clearly state so. Whether leaded or lead-free, all our crystal items are perfectly safe to use.

The website doesn't have what I'm looking for

Our range is extensive but doesn't cover everything. If you are looking for something specific which isn't on our website we may still be able to help.

As the manufacturer of our statues we can customise and even sculpt a completely new piece if needed (please note this requires a minimum initial order of 50).
